MELAKA, June 16 (Bernama) -- Negeri Sembilan and Penang collected the first two gold medals from squash in the men and women's individual events, respectively, in the 13th Malaysia Games (Sukma) at the Hang Jebat Squash Complex here Wednesday.
Negeri Sembilan's Mohd Asyraf Azan had to face a tough challenge from Valentino Bong of Sarawak in the men's individual finals.
He lead the first set at 11-8, but Valentino gained his composure in the second set to level the score 1-1, with 11-9.
Mohd Asyraf fought back the remaining sets to clinch his first Sukma gold medal with 11-2 and 11-7.
"It was a tough fight against Valentino. He was eager to win the game. I managed to maintain my focus so as not to get into his rhythm," said the 22-year-old.
The bronze medal was won by Perak's Chong Kam Hing who defeated Selangor's Muhd Zul Azri Abdul Aziz in straight sets, 11-3, 11-4 and 11-9.
Earlier in the women's event, competition favourite and Malaysia's number 4, Low Wee Wern, 20, had an easy win over Siti Munirah Jusoh of Terengganu in the finals enroute to her third successive Sukma gold medal.
The competition's top seed sealed the game at 13-11, 11-1 and 11-7.
"The first set was a tough one. She (Siti Munirah) managed to drag me for a tie-break match. In the second set, she made many mistakes and I took advantage of that," said Wee Wern.
The women's individual bronze medal went to Negeri Sembilan's Zulhijah Azan who defeated P. Pushpa Devi of Selangor in a five-setter at 7-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-1 and 12-10.
